about

I’ll Never Let You Go (Tampa Red) An unsung blues hero, Tampa Red recorded this rocking example
of post-war Chicago blues in 1952; the Riders’ repertoire has always included Tampa Red material.

Greasy Spoon (The Crusaders) A funky jazz/blues piece from another favourite Riders source,
The Crusaders. This dates from 1971, on the album ‘Pass the Plate’.

No More Doggin’ (Rosscoe Gordan) This ‘flat tyre’ shuffle goes back to the Riders’ earliest songlist
in the latter 1960s. A big hit for crazy Memphis piano man Rosscoe Gordon, in 1952.

Cookin’ At The Continental (Horace Silver) An up-tempo instrumental blues workout from the
great ‘Soul Jazz’ pianist Horace Silver, first recorded in 1959 (The horn line was lifted by Albert King
for his ‘Let’s Have A Natural Ball’).

Evalena (Tampa Red) Another Chicago blues shuffle from Riders favourite Tampa Red, recorded in
1952, and in the Riders’ set list of the early 1970s
.
Early In The Morning (Louis Jordan) Louis Jordan is another jazz/blues artist popular with the Riders,
and this New Orleans-flavoured rhumba was recorded by him in 1947. A good vehicle for keyboard
guest Clayton Doley.

The Peeper (Hank Crawford) One-time Ray Charles sideman, alto-sax player Hank Crawford wrote
many memorable blues; ‘The Peeper’ dates from 1962, with Dobro guitar and harmonica playing
the horn line in this Riders version.

Durn Tootin’ (Tiny Grimes) Tiny Grimes was a great, swinging, jazz/blues guitarist, big from the
1940s to the 1970s and quite an influence on the West Coast jump blues bands of the 1980s and
90s. ‘Durn Tootin’’ is a good example of his rootsy style.

Close To You (Muddy Waters) The Muddy Waters Band was probably the Riders’ single biggest
influence, and this 1958 piece by Willie Dixon appeared in the Riders repertoire in the early 1970s.

For Mods Only (Archie Shepp) This tongue-in-cheek instrumental was penned by new wave tenor
man Archie Shepp when he sat in on piano at a Chico Hamilton recording session for the Impulse
label in the late 1960s.

Ridin’ On The L & N (Lionel Hampton) Originally a quirky piano boogie novelty number from Lionel
Hampton in 1946, this was in the Riders’ earliest songlist, and has been revamped for its
reappearance here.
